NO NEW climate wrecking COAL MINE FOR TASMANIA

Hard Rock Coal Mining (HRCM) wants to build a new climate wrecking coal mine, 15km west of St Marys, in north east Tasmania. It would produce up to one million tonnes of coal per year. Burning coal is the largest source of carbon emissions in Australia. Coal mines also produce methane, a potent greenhouse gas. No new coal mines can be built if we are serious about tackling global heating.

You can help stop this mine from going ahead

HRCM’s mine would have a devastating effect on the local environment. At the time of assessment, there were endangered wedge-tailed eagle nests nearby, with one nest less than 300m away. The mine will also hurt the surrounding forests and farms by polluting creeks and rivers with acid run off.

Tasmania has the opportunity to move beyond coal. Most industrial users in Tasmania have already stopped using coal, but this mine would undo that progress.

A new coal mine in Tasmania would contribute to global heating, undermine Tasmania’s image, and devastate the local environment.

HRCM’s mining lease is up for renewal by the Tasmanian Government in August 2023. Without a lease, the mine cannot go ahead.

You can help stop this climate wrecking mine.  Sign the petition to tell Felix Ellis, the Tasmanian Minister for Resources, not to renew HRCM’s lease.

The Tasmanian Conservation Trust (TCT) is part of a network (Fossil Free Lutruwita) that opposes the construction of HRCM’s new coal mine in Tasmania. TCT has fought to protect our beautiful state for over 50 years. We partner with communities around Tasmania to protect biodiversity, reserves, and cultural heritage. TCT uses community organising, legal challenges and advocacy to achieve its goals.
